Underwriting Research & Development (Data Analytics) Intern

ROLE SUMMARY:

This role supports underwriting Research and Development by delivering data-driven insights and improving frameworks for evaluating underwriting evidence. Essential tasks include analyzing automated underwriting data, assisting in predictive modeling, enhancing data visualizations, providing ad hoc reports, and fostering a culture of data and analytics across the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist Underwriting Research and Development initiatives by providing actionable, data-driven insights to decision-makers
  • Help improve the technical framework for a systematic retro-study tool to assess the protective value of new pieces of underwriting evidence
  • Analyze data from our automated underwriting engine to help inform rule changes, prevent fraud, and improve straight-through processing rate
  • Assist with various predictive modeling projects such as risk classification, clean-sheeting detection, early claim forecasting, and smoker non-disclosure
  • Enhance existing data visualizations by partnering with consumers to understand opportunities for improvement and enhancement
  • Provide ad hoc reporting and analysis to various leaders within operations
  • Support the development of our analytics community through collaboration with other analysts and education of our customers at all levels of the organization on metrics, dashboards, and tools.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Studying in a quantitative field such as Data Science, Economics, Mathematics, Actuarial Science, Finance, or Statistics
  • Analytical aptitude is essential; mathematical and statistical knowledge/experience is helpful
  • Possess a customer service attitude and demonstrate effective communication at all levels of the organization
  • Experience with Tableau, Python, or R, preferred
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to reconcile reporting by explaining relevant variables and their respective impact on the reporting
  • Thirst for learning new things quickly, enjoys challenges, and is a demonstrated self-starter
  • Naturally inquisitive and willing to independently seek out knowledge, ask relevant questions, and formulate and articulate opinions

The base compensation range represents the low and high end of the range for this position. Actual compensation will vary and may be above or below the range based on various factors including but not limited to qualifications, skills, competencies, location, and experience. The range listed is just one component of our total compensation package for employees.
